Education required for the mechanical engineer:

Education preparation to become an engineer involves the obtainment of a bachelors degree, and for those who want to do research, a graduate degree is also required. Engineers which offer their services to the public must be licensed. In addition to the standard engineering degree, many colleges offer a 2 or 4 year degree in engineer technology. This type of education is needed for the engineer technician.

The engineer technician is not qualified to register as a professional engineer under the same terms as graduates with degrees in engineering, although engineer technicians may do very similar work as those who have a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

Job outlook for the mechanical engineer:

The job outlook for engineers overall looks good, although employment for mechanical engineers is expected to grow slightly more slowly through 2012 relative to other occupations. Developing technologies in biotechnology, materials science, and nanotechnology will result in new job opportunities for mechanical engineers.
